Paul Gates, DDS, MBA, FACD

Dr. Paul Gates received an Associate of Arts degree from Potomac State College and both a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Doctorate of Dental Surgery at West Virginia University. He earned an MBA at Fairleigh Dickinson University. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a former Fellow of the American Council on Education.

Dr. Gates served as the Chairman of the Department of Dentistry and the Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center for twenty-nine years. He also serves as the Chairman of Dentistry for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Health Center. He was been involved in dental education since 1973, previously holding a series of faculty and administrative positions at Fairleigh Dickinson University including Interim Dean of the College of Dental Medicine, Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs and Assistant to the President for Minority Affairs and Health Planning Services at the University.

Dr. Gates was honored in 2021 by the ADEAGies Foundation for achievements as a dental educator. He was inducted as a Distinguished Practitioner of Dentistry by the National Academies of Practice. He has previously been honored for his leadership and service to the profession of Dentistry by the American College of Dentist (Fellow), and the National Dental Association Foundation. He is listed in Who’s Who in Dentistry, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who Among Black Americans. Dr. Gates received the NDA President’s Award in 2002.

A Fellow of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, he served on the 2010-11 HRSA funded Institute of Medicine Committee on an Oral Health Initiative which produced the Report: Advancing Oral Health in America; April, 2011.

Dr. Gates has received more than 30 HRSA-funded oral health related grants including faculty development for minority residents in Dentistry; leadership for residents in dentistry; oral health services for HIV+/AIDS patients; and the education of underrepresented minorities in post-graduate dental education. His current research involves a comprehensive national survey of the practice habits and attitudes of minority dentists.
